Happy Birthday, America

Our forefathers fought to create a land of freedom 237 years ago, and the brave continue to fight for this country everyday.  Without you, I would not be able to wake up safe and with the freedom to do what I love.  Thank you.

Happy Fourth of July!

Red + White + Booze

The Fourth of July always has had a special place in my heart.  Growing up, my dad would take me to the edge of city limits and spend more money on fireworks than intended - but it is impossible to buy just one of anything.  Mom always made a flag Jello Cake with Cool Whip and fruit on top, and started me on my event planning skills early by having me do the table setup.

As night fell, the entire block was sitting in our driveway - tailgates down and kitchen chairs pulled from the house for extra seating.  You would think we were country folk, but this was just what it meant to celebrate July 4th in the south with my family.

Fast forward a few decades, and I am still in the south but five hours from family.  Instead of going home, I have decided to host a party complete with specialty cocktail, slip-n-slide and quite possibly a Jello Cake.

The cocktail of choice for this party is a mix of bourbon & lemonade with a splash of cherry juice.  Now keep in mind that natural cherry juice is more sweetly tart than anything you'll find in a bottle of Robitussin.  To make one drink, you will add 1 ounce of bourbon to a tall ice-fille glass and fill the rest with lemonade (you can combine the two in an ice filled cocktail shaker, if you prefer it colder and well mixed).  Now add a splash of cherry juice, a sprig of mint and you are done!

There is no way I want to spend the entire evening making individual cocktails for everyone, so the plan will be to make it in bulk using Chick Fila Diet Lemonade, Jack Daniels (hints of vanilla to compliment the overall taste), and Just Black Cherry juice.  I'll put a small bowl of cut mint near the beverage station for garnish along with a mason jar of straws.....

Regardless of what you will be drinking, I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

July Mood Board

Sure July typically reminds us of Red + White + Blue, bright summer colors and lots of sun.  However, I am in the middle of redoing my office and I am trying to draw inspiration from blank palettes, since my art work is pretty bold.  My idea is to keep things simple everywhere except my walls.  Even that, though, is going to stay within certain parameters.

Let me just say that there is nothing fantastic about the overhead lighting in the space right now.  Not how it looks, but the fact that it gives off hardly enough light to even see that I have a light hanging from the ceiling.  Unless you want to feel like you are in an interrogation room with a beam of light shining down in the middle of the room, this is probably not the best option for an office space.  My lighting crush is the "Hicks" Pendant Light by Thomas O'Brien for Visual Comfort.  I imagine if the black & bronze version was hung in my house, I would sit and stare at it for a long while with a ridiculous smile on my face.  Sadly, Horchow's 10% discount doesn't even help put a dent in the price, but a girl can dream, right?

Scouring the internet for ideas is never complete without adding bookmarks of fun things to add to the house.  A few of my favorites right now are lighters created from little vintage perfume bottles, business card holders made out of old rulers, delicate little tea cups with gold foil lip marks on the rim, and tulip chairs with custom sheepskin covers in a creamy color scheme.  Of course, life would be boring if everything was plain and simple - why not throw in glitter spoons for a little fun.

How do you draw inspiration when you want to re-design a space?  Do you prefer to keep things simple or are you drawn to bolder color schemes?
